We initiated the project with several ideation workshops. These sessions allowed the children to brainstorm and share their creative ideas for the mural. We emphasised inclusivity, ensuring every child’s voice was heard. The children presented their concepts through drawings and discussions. On the mural creation day, while the actual painting was done by our team due to the project’s scale, the children were given the opportunity to observe the process from a designated safe zone. This engagement fostered a sense of involvement and excitement as they saw their ideas come to life.
Hawes Side Academy
We integrated the children’s learning about Picasso into the mural. The process began with classroom visits where I interacted with the students and observed their pastel crayon drawings inspired by Picasso. The children shared their thoughts and artistic interpretations, which I then incorporated into the mural design. Out of over 200 student artworks, I selected 12 pieces that best represented their creativity and diversity. The final mural, which became the longest of its kind at the time, was a testament to the students’ artistic contributions and our collaborative effort.
Blackpool & The Fylde College
The co-creation process was deeply collaborative. We conducted a series of workshops over several weeks, where students were encouraged to share their ideas and artistic visions. These sessions involved sketching, brainstorming, and discussing potential themes for the mural. We ensured that the students’ ideas were central to the final design. When it came time to paint, we combined their individual contributions into a unified mural, reflecting a collective vision that resonated with the entire student body.
Pear Tree School
The project at Pear Tree School was particularly special due to the active involvement of the students in the creation process. We held multiple workshops where students helped design and make stencils for the mural. These sessions were tailored to accommodate the needs of the students, ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment. On the painting day, several students participated in applying the stencils and painting under our supervision. This hands-on involvement not only enhanced their creative skills but also gave them a profound sense of accomplishment and ownership of the artwork.
